Belal Ahmed: To enhance safety in New York City’s subway, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York State has ordered the deployment of the National Guard at several key subway stations and platforms to improve security. Previously, at the end of January, New York City Mayor Eric Adams deployed nearly 1,000 NYPD officers on overtime in the subway to ensure passenger safety and restore a sense of security.
Mayor Adams also mentioned that an additional 250 NYPD officers could be deployed alongside the National Guard as needed. Governor Hochul has prioritized passenger safety by instructing random bag checks at station entrances. She stated that those who object to bag checks do not need to use the subway. Mayor Adams noted that subway crime is decreasing but highlighted an ongoing issue where a few offenders are released shortly after arrest and return to the subway to engage in criminal activities.
