Raunak Haque Ratan, a 20-year-old Bangladeshi-American, was tragically shot and killed by an unidentified Black individual in Cheektowaga, a suburb near Buffalo, New York, on Saturday, October 12. The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the local Bangladeshi community, though the suspect remains at large under police surveillance.
Reports indicate that Ratan, who had parked his car and was chatting with two friends, was approached by the suspect, who demanded they move the car. Ratan and his friends refused, explaining they were parked legally. Following a heated exchange, the assailant drew a gun and fired multiple shots at Ratan before fleeing the scene. Critically injured, Ratan was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Buffalo Police are actively investigating, and it has been reported that the assailant called the police himself to report the incident. Local city officials, including the mayor and council members, visited Ratan’s family to offer condolences. Bangladeshi expatriates held a rally demanding the immediate arrest and strict punishment of the suspect.
Ratan was born in Jamaica, New York City, and moved with his family to Buffalo a few years ago. He was the second of three siblings and was studying in his second year at a local college. His father, Ataur Liton, hails from Shibganj, Bogura, Bangladesh. The family, who lived in New York City for 21 years, relocated to Buffalo recently. Ratan was a former student of the Jamaica Muslim Center School.
Ratan’s funeral prayer was held at the Buffalo Muslim Center on Monday, October 14, attended by a large crowd, including many from the Bangladeshi community. He was laid to rest at the Buffalo Harlem Cemetery on Tuesday.
