The Vessel at Hudson Yards is set to reopen after nearly 1,200 days of closure following a series of tragic suicides, which highlighted significant safety issues. Originally opened in 2019, the honeycomb-shaped structure quickly gained popularity as an architectural landmark, attracting global visitors eager to explore its unique stairways. However, after four suicides occurred over 18 months ending in July 2021, the site was shut down. In April, Hudson Yards representatives announced a new safety plan that would enable the Vessel’s reopening. Steel mesh barriers have been added to four stairwells and adjacent platforms—about half the original public space—without altering the structure’s iconic views. The first two levels will fully reopen, while the higher levels will be accessible only where barriers have been installed. Local residents and business owners, like Brooklyn’s Max Gallo, appreciate the attraction’s beauty and economic impact, while visitors like Angelina Fiorini see it as a powerful reminder of mental health awareness. The reopening is expected to boost foot traffic and revitalize nearby businesses, with tickets already available online ahead of the official reopening on Monday.
