New York City honored the WNBA champion New York Liberty with a celebratory parade in the Canyon of Heroes in Manhattan on Thursday. Thousands of fans turned out to cheer on Liberty stars like Jonquel Jones, Breanna Stewart, and Sabrina Ionescu, who helped secure the franchise's first championship title in an overtime win against the Minnesota Lynx in Game 5 of the Finals at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. The parade, broadcast live on Channel 7 and streamed on ABC 7 New York, featured appearances from early Liberty legends like Teresa Weatherspoon, Vickie Johnson, and Kym Hampton. Fans of all ages lined the route, with many young supporters sporting Liberty jerseys. Jones proudly displayed her Finals MVP trophy, while Stewart and Ionescu interacted with the crowd, sharing high-fives and selfies. Longtime fan Sarah Davis expressed excitement, saying, "I've been a Liberty fan since the beginning in 1997. It's amazing to celebrate a championship like this." Sabrina Ionescu shared how meaningful the turnout was, highlighting how much bringing a championship to New York means to the community. The parade also drew the attendance of prominent New York leaders, including Senator Chuck Schumer, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Mayor Eric Adams. Hochul, who awarded the team keys to the city during a City Hall ceremony, praised the team's accomplishments and thanked owners Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai for their investment. Later that evening, the celebration continued with a fan event at Barclays Center. Liberty fan Nakiya Greene, excited to attend all the day's festivities, summed up the celebratory spirit by saying, “New York!”
