The New York State Police are investigating a fatal accident on I-90 that involved a Thruway worker. The accident took place around 8 a.m. on Monday near Exit 58/Silver Creek in Hanover. The victim, identified as 58-year-old Stephen "Steve" Ebling from Eden, was a New York State Thruway Maintenance Supervisor. Authorities report that a Honda Civic traveling westbound on I-90 in the left lane struck Ebling. The driver, who is from Ohio, is cooperating with police, and no charges have been filed.
According to State Police, Ebling’s vehicle was parked on the highway’s left shoulder, and he was standing in front of it. The Civic crossed over the hazard markings toward his vehicle, prompting Ebling to step into the left lane to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, the driver corrected and re-entered the left lane, hitting Ebling. Multiple lanes in both directions were closed for several hours Monday morning while police investigated but were reopened later.
Teamsters Local 465 President Louis Picani discussed safety measures for Thruway workers in an interview. He called for increased police presence at work sites to encourage drivers to slow down. "More police presence could help, as drivers are more likely to slow down when they see law enforcement,” Picani said. He also recommended using more protective bumper trucks at work sites, despite potential costs. "You can’t put a price on a human life," he stated, adding, "Some accidents may be unavoidable, but we must do everything we can to reduce incidents like this. Families will suffer lifelong grief from these losses, and no one should worry about their loved ones not returning from work.”
