New York City Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Jessica Tisch as the new commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), effective Monday, November 25. Tisch will become the second woman to lead the NYPD in its 179-year history, following her predecessor Keechant Sewell, who was also appointed by Adams.
Tisch, currently serving as commissioner of the Department of Sanitation (DSNY), has spent 12 years with the NYPD in various capacities. She takes on her new role at a time when the city is marking 10 consecutive months of declining crime rates. During her tenure at DSNY, she led the “Trash Revolution,” achieving significant milestones, including containerizing 70% of the city's daily 44 million pounds of waste.
Mayor Adams praised Tisch as a proven leader and manager, emphasizing her ability to continue reducing crime and ensuring public safety. He also acknowledged Interim Police Commissioner Thomas Donlon for his service over the past two months.
Reflecting on her appointment, Tisch expressed deep respect for the NYPD and its mission, vowing to advance the department’s efforts in crime reduction, counterterrorism, training, and technology while maintaining public trust and confidence.
